"Be Internet Awesome" aims to educate kids about digital safety & citizenship

With kids home for the summer, there's plenty of free time for fun in the sun --which means there's also ample time to spend with the Internet at their fingertips. Whether older kids are posting pool selfies on social media, using Snapchat with friends or just sharing and exploring new information, it's not always easy to hover over their every online move. Fortunately for parents, there is help.
That's because Google has recently launched a program called Be Internet Awesome. Developed in collaboration with online safety experts -- such as the Internet Keep Safe Coalition, the family Online Safety Institute and ConnectSafely -- it aims to educate youth about digital safety and citizenship. The program's five main goals are: ? Be Internet Smart: Share with care.
? Be Internet Alert: Don't fall for fake.
? Be Internet Strong: Secure your secrets.
? Be Internet Kind: It's cool to be kind.
? Be Internet Brave: When in doubt, talk it out.
So how is Google tackling these tough topics, you ask"Â In three different ways, actually.
1) An interactive online game called Interland, where kids battle hackers, phishers, over-sharers and bullies to refine skills they'll need to be good digital citizens.
2) A classroom curriculum educators teaching online safety can download and use.
3) AÂ pledge for the entire family as a way to start the conversation or review the basics.
