16 essentials for a new mom's diaper bag

When it comes to toting around baby gear, I tend to think of myself as a prepared minimalist. If I were truly committed to just carrying the basics, I might throw an extra diaper and a few wipes into my purse. But let's face it, poop happens. More accurately, blowouts happen. Especially when you're in the throes of newborn babyhood. Not only that, being unprepared can turn any enjoyable outing with your baby into a nightmarish puddle of tears -- yours and your baby's.
So while I like to keep things simple, preparation is the name of the game to make those intimidating outings with your newborn a raving success. Here are a few things that were standard in my diaper bag (which wasn't actually a diaper bag). Check out my must-haves below.
Diaper Bag Must-Haves
The Bag: In this case, it's a generously sized purse that just happens to have great elastic and zip pockets on the inside. And if you're like me and like to shop outside the baby section for your diaper bag, there's one thing that is non-negotiable -- an outside pocket. This is where your quick-grab things go, whether it's your cell phone, car keys, or that extra binky. You'll want them at the ready and easy to find. This one gets bonus points for having both shoulder straps and the ability to be worn cross-body.
A spare baby outfit. Whether it's a lap full of spit-up or a diaper blow out, you'll need a back-up plan for your baby.
