16 lessons I have learned from 16 years of motherhood

Sixteen years of motherhood and sometimes I still can't believe I'm a mother. I get unexpected little eruptions of emotion when I hear my children's voices wrap around the word "Mommy." They are growing so fast and I have so much yet to learn. Sometimes feel as if I'm running out of time.
Here's just a tiny sample of the things I've learned so far:
1.Wooden toys. Plastic toys. Did I seriously waste time agonizing over this"
2. You never get the old you back. I could have spared myself years of angst if I had just realized from the minute my first egg was fertilized, that my life, my heart, my brain, and my belly button would be forever unrecognizable as mine.
3. Control is an illusion. The sooner you realize you are NOT in control of who this little human being will become, the better, and happier, parent you will be. 4. (See above) The person your kid is the moment they emerge from the birth canal, is a very good indicator of who they'll be as adults. Personality is preordained, we are just shepherds.
5. From the moment their eyes can focus, your children are watching you. And they are listening too. And they will remember. Everything. Especially the stuff you really regret saying and doing.
6. Not taking any of it too seriously is almost always the better choice.
7. There will come a day when it's no longer okay to tell your kids they are cute every time they do anything remotely independent. "Oh it's so cute when ...
