My favourite book when I was a kid was Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish.
It's hard to find a children's story that actually makes you laugh out loud, but no matter how many times I read it I'd crack up when poor Amelia put that chicken in lederhosen.
She was so earnest and well-intentioned, despite her colossal screw-ups. I just loved her. When I was pregnant many, many years later, the name Amelia was at the top of my list.
In fact, I ended up with two daughters named, in part, after classic kids' book characters: Madeline and Amelia.
