4 reminders that comic books aren't always appropriate for kids

Comic books are terrific. They?re exciting, fun, and provide a great look at our culture through a four-color lens. Some of them achieve truly great things on an artistic level. Many of them serve as a good way to turn kids into readers -- but not all of them.
The Silver Age of comics ended 40 years ago, but lots of people still associate the medium with Adam West and friends. There?s nothing wrong with those kid-friendly comic books; I?ve even mentioned some of them multiple times before. Unfortunately, a lot of adult material gets shelved in the kids? section of libraries and bookstores.
My local library, like many others, has only one section for graphic novels, and it?s upstairs with the kids? books. On the bright side, the comics at least land in the Young Adults section. On the other hand, several of them contain content that parents would be shocked to see middle schoolers reading. I?m not suggesting that we need to worry about what comic books our kids are reading. Like any other form of media, however, it?s good for parents to vet the content if they can. If you can?t, here?s a quick rundown of some popular comic books whose content might surprise the uninitiated. (SPOILER ALERT!)
The Dark Knight Returns: This is a seminal work by Frank miller that dramatically changed comic books in the 1980s. If you?ve ever watched a modern Batman movie, you?ve witnessed scenes that were pulled out of the pages of this comic book.
