5 fun ways to honor Black History Month with kids

When it comes to teaching kids, it?s important to make each lesson fun and engaging. Let?s face it; no one wants to sit through a boring lecture, especially young children. So, in honor of Black History Month, here are some fun ways to celebrate with kids.
Get up and dance. Finding music rich with African roots is the perfect way to get kids learning while grooving. You can even get some cool African drums to play along with the music. This is also a great way to teach kids about the history behind some of the music we listen to today, while exercising.
Read books. If your little one loves literature, incorporate stories about historical African American figures into your Black History Month celebration. There are so many different books for all ages to choose from. Visit your local library. You can always find programs dedicated to black history at your local library. My husband recently took the kids there for books, crafts and other fun activities. You might also find a list of performances taking place in your area to honor African Americans.
Talk about your family history. My daughter enjoys learning about her African Caribbean roots. We often look through family photo albums and talk about our family history. Not only are we honoring Black History Month, our kids are learning about their heritage and their own identity.
