7 mom-and-baby parties that are thrown in other countries

Moms in the U.S. aren't the only ones to get their own special pregnancy- or baby-themed events. Here are how moms and babies in other countries are celebrated.
1. Baby showers: You already know about these parties, at which pregnant moms are "showered" with gifts. But did you know they're a growing trend all over the Americas, not just the United States" In Mexico, for instance, recent research by BabyCenter found that up to 74 percent of women have gone to or will have their own baby shower (compared to 69 percent of U.S. moms).
In Mexico, cakes or "thrones" made out of diapers are the centerpiece of the celebration, in contrast to U.S. parties, where elaborate cakes usually hold that position. Latina moms who live in the U.S. will often throw themed parties with balloon arches; in Brazil, showers often revolve around stockpiling diapers for the new mom.
2. Namakarana: This Hindu naming ceremony is one of the "Sanskara" (rites of passage) described in ancient Sanskrit texts, and it's often held 12 days after a baby's birth. Far-flung family members come, the baby is bathed and dressed in beautiful new clothing, and his or her name is announced. Then it's time for a feast, gifts for the baby and new parents, and a joyful, celebratory party.
