I'm not ready to potty train my 21-month-old but we have been practicing elimination communication for some time now. I excitedly called my mom and told her what I was doing. She responded, "Oh yeah, your great-grandmother used to do that with your brother."

That's when it hit me. Elimination communication is nothing new. And when I started thinking about it, several of the trendy mom things I do aren't even trends?they are super old things parents have been doing forever that got fancy names in recent history. Elimination Communication
If you watched the documentary Babies (on Netflix, duh!) you will remember that one of the mother's actually used elimination communication. Remember the baby in Namibia who never wore a diaper" In her book, Diaper Free! Ingrid Bauer wrote, "In many cultures around the world, mothers still know how to understand and respond to their infant?s elimination needs to keep them clean and content."
