7 yoni necklaces and why you should wear one

My first glimpse of a "yoni" necklace was when I was scrolling through Facebook. Megan, my doula, had recently begun training as a midwife and her friend and artist, Jamaica Zoglman, designed her a yoni necklace.
Yoni is a sanskrit word that means sacred space. (In more literate terms, it means vulva.)Â I found many artists referred to their artwork this way. Megan said, "For me it symbolizes the intricate, soft, colorful and beauty of the yoni, which I'm finding is a driving force in my life."
I found the symbolism behind the artwork as compelling as the work itself. Each necklace listed below was handcrafted by a woman. All aspects of the vagina are represented: some artists focusing on the labia, others the clitoris, and some the entire vulva. These women used metal, clay, shells, and even upcycled materials to create their own version of our most sacred space. They are ordered below from least obvious to - there's no doubt that's a vagina.

I love the ingenuity behind this necklace. This artist can see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Etsy artist Sara says, "I began this craft not long after my first child was born. I felt a creative void that needed filling, but that also required little money and space. Like I said in my "About" section, my first materials came from scrap out of my own yard." (HammeredNTwisted, $45)
