Millions of families across the country look forward to spring break for a chance to shed their winter layers and escape to a warmer destination. This week-long hiatus from school and work is the perfect time for parents to unwind and bond with their kids. But, going away for an entire week doesn?t come cheap, and some families don?t have the means to make it happen. Combine the cost of airfare or fuel (depending on whether you're flying or driving to your destination) with accommodation, meals, entertainment and activities, and parents are looking at at a few thousand dollars.
If you're limited on travel funds, don?t give up on a family vacation just yet. Staying home can be an exciting adventure as long as you take the time to plan an experience that breaks everyone away from ordinary activities. Here are eight staycation ideas that will build lasting memories without breaking the bank.
Be a tourist in your own city.
You and your family may have overlooked the most interesting parts of the city or town in which you live in because you get stuck in a routine or are too busy to explore. Visit your local convention and visitor bureau for a list of free or low-cost experiences, from historical landmarks to farms to museums, and be a tourist in your own city. You're local library may even offer free museum passes for a family of four.
