8 ways to help a colicky baby

After four babies you would think I would be an expert in all things baby. But when my last baby went through a horrible bout of colic, I found I was completely unprepared.
I had no idea what was happening to my poor baby when he would cry uncontrollably for hours, fists clenched and legs kicking. I figured maybe he just had the worst-case ?witching hour(s)? ever. After talking with several other moms, it finally dawned on me that my baby was suffering from colic.
Once I knew what was afflicting Charlie I was able to look for a means to an end. I tried everything, and here is what worked the best.
1. Soothe your baby with warmth. Help soothe your baby?s tummy with a warm (not hot) bath or washcloth.
2. Pedal your baby?s legs. Loosen your baby's gas by placing him on his back and bicycle-pedaling legs.
3. Reduce outside stimulation. Calm your baby?s senses by reducing loud noises and bright lights.
4. Try white noise. Sound machines that make white noise, such as this giraffe, can further calm your baby.
5. Do the "colic carry." After doing steps 1-4, we could usually finally get Charlie to sleep by doing this "colic carry" while bouncing him. To try it, place your baby face-down on your forearm. Rest your baby's head either in the palm of your hand or in the crook of your arm.
