A dad's perspective on cord blood banking

Three years ago, I had my first child. From a father's perspective, the birth of a healthy child was first and foremost in importance. For nine months, I was with my wife for every pregnancy visit, making sense of every ultrasound, and trying to keep up with the dialogue between my wife and our ob-gyn on the pluses and minuses of pregnancy. Admittedly, I didn't understand it all, but I was as supportive as I could be, especially through the pregnancy hiccups.
During one of the prenatal visits, the doctor told us a little about cord blood banking. This was the first time I had ever heard about it. What is cord blood" Do I need it" Is it important" I went through weeks of research using WebMD, BabyCenter community message boards, and Google searches that landed me in over my head with scientific data from medical professionals. After getting through the basics of cord blood, I went to the websites of various cord blood banks to understand the difference between all of them. How long have they been in business" How many samples were they storing" What kind of clinical research were they doing"
