A huge unsung milestone: Our first trip without a diaper bag

It finally happened. The day I didn't believe would happen, the milestone I never saw coming, the definitive sign that I no longer have a baby.
The diaper bag is gone!
I'll admit I've had a rocky relationship with diaper bags. By the time my son was born, I owned three of them ? a practical one that I registered for, an impractical one that I didn't register for, and one I ordered off eBay in a wild, 9-months-pregnant-and-I-need-more-stuff panic.
I ended up keeping just one bag ? the most massive one, because I thought carrying around a mini version of Target in bag form made sense. Diaper rash cream, bandages, bananas, water, packets of Starbucks instant coffee, a full first aid kit, a muslin blanket, an extra set of clothes for both baby and me, utensils, hand sanitizer, nursing pads, diapers, teethers, toys, I was PREPARED. After about a year of dragging that bag to play dates and the park, the bag's straps shredded, the bottom was threadbare, and I had a perpetual achy shoulder.
Next my husband surprised me with a new diaper backpack, which was glorious. I don't know why I ever wasted my time with anything other than a backpack. It was roomy, easy to haul around, and the knots in my upper back almost disappeared.
I carried that bag for two years. Then I went away for a week without my family, and when I returned I never wore the bag again. It wasn't a purposeful decision; this coincided with my son being potty trained, and I didn't n...
