A hurricane birth story" Meet the moms and babies affected by Harvey
by Michelle Stein posted in Pregnancy
As Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Gulf Coast this weekend -- killing at least eight people and forcing more than 30,000 from their homes -- moms-to-be with looming due dates were still faced with preparing to welcome a baby into the world.
Danielle Weeks, who is scheduled to have a medically-necessary c-section on Tuesday, rode out the storm from a hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas. She ended up stranded there with her husband and two young children after evacuating their home in Port Aransas last week. Unfortunately, the family has since learned their house was destroyed by the hurricane. Even now, they're waiting to see if the c-section will be pushed back because of the storm.
Another woman from from Corpus Christi went into labor on Friday before Harvey hit -- and ended up giving birth as the hurricane made landfall. Irma Rodriguez delivered her 7-pound, 18-1/4-inch baby boy with back-up generators powering the hospital. And get this: At the suggestion of a nurse, Rodriguez decided to name her newest addition -- you guessed it -- Harvey. (Related: Did you read about the baby named Eclipse")
??It was exciting delivering my baby during the hurricane,?? Rodriguez said in a statement from Corpus Christi Medical Center-Doctors Regional. ??We are thankful for the care we received ... and for the good health of our family.??
Two other babies were delivered at nearby hospitals as Harvey made landfall, and another was born at home ...
