A lesson in words that have the power to hurt ? and heal
by Maggie Downs posted in Life
My 3-year-old son, about to snuggle on my lap, stopped short and stared at my face.
?What happened"? he said.
He pointed at a blemish on my cheek, and it was the tiniest thing, hardly there at all. I?m not even being vain when I say that. I had to squint to see it for myself in the mirror.
?That owie on your face,? my son said. ?Are you okay"? I told him I was fine, but he pressed me.
?Did I do it"?
?Make this spot on my face" No, baby!? I laughed. ?Why would you ever think that"?
?Did I do it when I yelled at you"?
The pureness of that moment almost made me gasp. Of course he thought that words could physically wound. Don?t they feel like they could"
