Are my kids too young to dye their hair crazy colors"
by Michelle Stein posted in Parenting
Ever since I started dying my hair bright colors -- first teal and now pink -- my two young children have begged to add pops of color to their hair, too.
"Can I have blue hair"" my 5-year-old son asked excitedly when I recently came home with fuchsia tresses.
"I want pink hair!" exclaimed his 3-year-old sister.
They want to be just like mama, it seems, only with their favorite colors.
"Maybe when you're a little older," is my usual reply.
Truth be told, I've considered letting them do it. I mean, it's just hair after all. They're little and it's fun. And it would only be temporary dye -- which washes out in a couple of weeks. Plus, it might be a great incentive for good behavior. What's the harm" Except that little voice in the back of my head starts chiming in. "No, people will think it's terrible parenting."Â "They're way too young to have crazy hair." "Is that even 'allowed' at school"" Spoiler: My son's dress code doesn't say anything specifically about hair color. Just that their clothing/appearance shouldn't be 'distracting.' I think we could totally get away with a little blue in his hair.
So what's stopping me, then" Why am I so worried about what other parents might think"
As much as I enjoy doing my own thing in life and pretending like I give zero effs about how strangers perceive me, I do care to some extent. Unfortunately, non-convent...
