Back to school" The ONE thing all parents should do
by Lindsay Weiss posted in Life
I have three kids ? seventh grade, fourth grade and preschool. In my many years of having kids in school, I?ve learned what I think is the most important thing you can do to ensure their success:
You have to volunteer in the classroom.
(Wait!!! Stay with me. I know you're already thinking of umpteen really good reasons you can't or don't want to. Keep reading.)
Your ?volunteering? will look different for every teacher ? sometimes you?re lucky enough to get in there and actually work with the kids, others you?re stuck out in the hallway cutting and pasting ? but make no mistake about it, you should absolutely take whatever volunteering breadcrumb the teacher gives and run with it.
Why" Because that little window into your kiddo?s whole world is priceless. Even if you?re banished to the hallway cutting 40,000 flash cards and can?t actually see your child. This is your one and only chance to see (or hear) all the important parts of your child?s life ? how they interact and respond to their teacher, who their friends are, how they respond to directions and structure and problem-solving. It gives you insight into their behavior, which friendships are blossoming, and how others perceive your child. Even if you?re sitting in the hallway you still hear EVERYTHING and even that eavesdropping is so telling.
For me, logging some volunteer hours helps tremendously when conferences arrive because you have a context for any issues your child?s teac...
