Be a night diaper ninja: Our favorite quick-change products
by Joyce Slaton posted in Products & Prizes
In the first month of your baby's life, you can expect him to sleep for 14 to 18 hours a day, and go through about 8-12 diapers daily. Do the math and you'll soon realize what experienced parents already know: You'll be changing many a diaper in the middle of the night.
Do it carefully, and your baby may stay asleep during the whole process, or will groggily wake up but go right back down to sleep when you're done. If you're not so carefully...well, how much do you enjoy hearing your baby cry at 2 a.m."
When it comes to stealthy night- or nap-time diaper changes, the key is to minimize disturbing your baby. That means keeping a lid on lights, keeping him warm, and jostling him as little as possible. Here are some things we've found that help. 1. A wearable blanket that unzips from the bottom
It's not safe to put your baby to bed with loose blankets, so you'll want to get him a wearable blanket or sleep sack that goes over his sleeper to keep him warm all night. Choose a blanket that works for your wallet and your taste, but make sure of one thing: It should open from the bottom up, not the top down.
Why" If the zipper starts at the top of the blanket, you'll have to open it up fully to get at your baby's diaper. An unwrapped baby is a cold baby. A bottom-unzipping blanket, in contrast, only has to be opened up enough to do the diaper business. The rest of your baby stays warm, and everyone's happier.
