Choking prevention message urges parents "just cut the damn grapes"
by Whitney Barthel posted in Parenting
I get it, you?re busy. Your kid is starving and you?re fifteen minutes away from having supper on the table. You stir the spaghetti sauce and start digging for something?anything?to throw at them just to shut them up for a minute; a cracker, fruit snacks, or perhaps a grape or two.
Oh man, have we all been there. But this picture is a sobering reminder.
Angela Henderson, owner of Australian parenting blog Finlee and me, recently shared a shocking photo of a 5-year-old who was rushed into the ER while choking on a grape. The boy was put under general anesthesia so that the doctor could surgically remove the grape.
The crazy thing is?this was a 5-year-old, not an 18-month-old, or a 2-year-old.
On her Facebook page, Angela, a mental health professional with emphasis in childhood development, urges parents to always cut grapes, cherry tomatoes, etc., even for younger school-aged children. Thankfully, this little boy had part of his airway still open, and what could have ended tragically is now a happy ending. After the scare was over, the boy?s mother, along with the pediatrician, have been sharing the photo with this message: JUST CUT THE DAMN GRAPES.
Have you ever had a choking scare"
