Compelling new documentary aims to end postpartum depression stigma
by Becky Vieira posted in Parenting
A new documentary, When the Bough Breaks, is shattering the stigma and silence surrounding postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. For every woman who dealt with PPD and felt lost and alone, for every partner or family member who struggled to understand their loved one, or for anyone whose life has been touched by postpartum depression, this film shouldn?t be missed
Narrated and executive-produced by Brooke Shields, who made her PPD struggle public in 2005 with her book, Down Came the Rain: My Struggle With Postpartum Depression, the film offers a raw look at life with PPD, and the tragic lows experienced by those suffering with the condition.
Viewers meet women who are facing postpartum depression head-on, and families who lost loved ones to suicide and even infanticide. When the Bough Breaks doesn?t simply pull back the curtain on PPD...it shreds it.
Lindsay Gerszt, one of the film?s producers, is also the the subject of some of the most raw and honest scenes in the film. Cameras follow her as she undergoes treatment for her six-year battle with PPD. In addition to seeing a psychiatrist she seeks alternative methods of healing, including acupuncture and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), a psychotherapy approach that aims to reduce stresses from certain memories -- which, in Gerszt?s case was her traumatic birth experience that led, in part, to her PPD.
Every new mom deserves to be blissfully happy aft...
