A recent story from New York magazine?s The Cut explores families who raise theybies ? ?babies whose parents had decided not to reveal their sex, who used they/them pronouns for their children, and whose goal was to create an early childhood free of gendered ideas of how a child should dress, act, play, and be.?
These are parents who know the anatomy their child was born with, which is biological sex, but reject designating the child?s gender, which is how someone identifies. (Want to know more about the difference between sex and gender" The Genderbread Person is super helpful.)
The article mostly follows one couple, Bobby McCullough and Lesley Fleishman, who were inspired by a news story about a Canadian baby born without a gender designation, and decided to raise their own baby in a more gender-creative way. ?Definitely the concept of not enforcing gender stereotypes was something that was on our radar, but we simply didn?t know or have the idea on our own to not assign the baby a gender,? McCullough told reporter Alex Morris.
The couple spoke openly to friends and family about their decision and answered questions. They found a midwife who was on the same page and was willing to not register a gender. They researched how to register a birth certificate without a gender listed and started referring to the baby only with neutral pronouns like their/they, not he/she.
