Diaper rashes aren't created equal: How to tell them apart

I used to think a diaper rash is a diaper rash is a diaper rash. Turns out all diaper rashes are not the same and certainly not created equal.
*4 boys and 6.5 consecutive years of diapers later...While most diaper rashes are run-of-the-mill and easily treated with a little Desitin and some TLC, there are others that turn out to be just a little more.
Here are a few signs your baby?s diaper rash might be more serious than the usual (and make sure you see your pediatrician if your baby has a severe diaper rash accompanied by open sores or blisters):
1. Diaper rash accompanied by a yeast infection. I thought only girls could get yeast infections, so when my first son got one I was blown away. His infection happened right under his belly button, under the top of his diaper.
Most yeast infections show up as tiny red dots, generally in the warm, moist areas of your baby?s body (the folds and cracks). However, some yeast infections can travel to your baby?s thighs and abdomen to form satellite infections. That's what happened with my son.
Luckily I was able to ask Daniel's pediatrician about the infection at a well-baby appointment. She recommended using a cream with zinc oxide (an effective natural compound for treating and preventing yeast outbreaks), before trying a more powerful topical anti-yeast cream.
It knocked that rash and infection out of the park within a couple of days!
