Did Adam Conover really ruin breastfeeding"
by Charlie Brooks posted in Parenting
The TV show Adam Ruins Everything gives comedian Adam Conover a platform to dispel some myths in our society. Last month, the show tackled parenting, including the breastfeeding versus formula feeding debate. For those who didn?t catch it, you can watch a segment here. Long story short: You aren?t a failure of a mother if you don?t breastfeed.
Throughout every episode of this show, little blurbs in the corner of the screen show citations that back up each claim. It?s hard to fact-check a comedy show while you?re enjoying it, but I thought it might be interesting to check this segment?s sources. Here are the claims in the clip and their associated citations.
Breastfeeding Pros and Cons
?Breastfeeding is normal, natural, and great.? Source: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2016. That?s a vague citation, but I?m betting it?s referencing the fact that this organization published a Committee Opinion in 2016 that reiterated its recommendation that parents exclusively breastfeed for a baby?s first six months. ?Breastfeeding takes 35 hours a week.? Source: Courtney Jung, Lactivism, 2015. The full title of Jung?s book is Lactivism: How Feminists and Fundamentalists, Hippies and Yuppies, and Physicians and Politicians Made Breastfeeding Big Business and Bad Policy. Jung?s book claims that the push for breastfeeding is more about money than health.
Jung herself appears in the segment as a ?professor and lactation expert....
