Several months ago I found a docuseries on PBS about intrauterine surgery on fetuses. Babies at 20 weeks gestation went under the knife through their mother?s abdomen to quell the advancement of spina bifida or other detrimental birth complications.
I found the three-part documentary riveting. The films follow several mothers throughout their pregnancy, surgery, birth, and follow-up appointments. It?s impossible to watch and not get emotional as you root these families on.
As the doctors discussed the procedure for the baby with spina bifida, one simple step in this surgeon?s method forever cemented my feelings on abortion. Before performing surgery the doctors anesthetized the babies.
These babies who underwent various operations could still technically be aborted, which entails either being suffocated by saline or being ripped limb from limb before being torn out of their mother?s womb.
The babies who aren?t wanted by this world don?t get the same luxury as the other babies going under the knife to prolong and better their life.
This thought made me sick. What makes the babies being aborted so different than the ones in this film"
