Here in Colorado, we're gearing up for the solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.
We're not on The Path of Totality (doesn't that sound all cool and sci-fi"), but where I am 92 percent of the sun will be obscured late Monday morning. We're pretty excited.
I've been reading a lot about the eclipse, and there are some fascinating superstitions that different cultures have regarding pregnant mamas during the time of an eclipse. It got me thinking -- back before we knew about eclipses, and knew that the sun would actually emerge again afterward, can you imagine what people thought" It would be terrifying. It's no wonder some traditions and superstitions developed to help people explain what was happening or feel like they had some control.
Hispanic eclipse superstitions
Some Hispanic cultures believe if you watch a lunar eclipse while pregnant, your baby will have a cleft lip. The myth has been traced back to Aztecs who believed the eclipse was a bite on the face of the moon, and if a mother saw it, her baby would suffer the same fate.
To protect her baby, the mother needed to carry something metallic, like a safety pin. Some people also believe the pregnant woman should wear red, like these BabyCenter community moms who got some unusual advice from friends and family before an eclipse.
