EipPens in short supply, here's how to find them
by Claudia Boyd-Barrett posted in Parenting
If your child carries an EpiPen or other epinephrine auto-injector to treat severe allergic reactions, now's a good time to make sure you have enough supply.
Last week, the FDA declared a shortage of EpiPens and several generic auto-injectors, citing manufacturing problems. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), you may have difficulty getting EpiPen, EpiPen Jr. and generic versions of EpiPen and Adrenaclick at some pharmacies.
It's not clear how long the shortage will last, but it's expected to be short term.
Only Kaleo?s Auvi-Q® auto-injector is reportedly not experiencing supply issues. However, this injector can cost thousands of dollars without insurance.
The FDA said the shortage doesn't mean you can't find auto-injectors, but you may have to look a bit harder.
Consumer Reports has some great recommendations on how to find epinephrine auto-injectors. These include:
? Call different pharmacies: Some may still have auto-injectors in stock.
? Call Mylan's customer relations line: Mylan makes EpiPens and may be able to locate a pharmacy near you that has them. Call 800-796-9526, then press 2, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
? Ask for alternatives: If the brand you normally use isn't available at your pharmacy, ask if they have another version.
? Get help paying for Auvi-Q: The company has a co-pay assistance program for people with limited insurance coverage. Visit www.auvi-q.com/getting-auvi-q/ for more inf...
