Flu season waning, but still be careful

Even though flu season is finally on the way out, don't let your guard down if you have young children.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Friday that thousands of people are still getting sick from the flu, and children are particularly susceptible to complications from the virus.
So far this flu season, 133 children have died from flu, including 5 during the week ending March 17 (the most recent week the CDC has records for). And although fewer people are visiting the doctor with flu-like symptoms, there's been an uptick in hospitalizations because of flu, the CDC reported.
Two types of flu viruses ? A and B ? have circulated this season. The A virus is associated with the most severe forms of illness, and thankfully that strain is now on the decline. But the B virus, which is currently the most common, can be just as serious as the A virus, especially for young children, said CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund according to CNN. What's more, people who get sick with one strain of the virus can still get sick with another, health officials said.
So, if you and your kids still haven't gotten the flu vaccine, the CDC recommends you do so. The vaccine is 42 percent effective against influenza B, the agency reports. Flu shots are appropriate for anyone aged 6 months or older, according to CDC guidelines.
