Help! Separation anxiety has turned my baby into a tiny stalker
by Becky Vieira posted in Parenting
According to this BabyCenter article, separation anxiety ?is a normal stage of emotional development that starts when babies begin to understand that things and people exist even when they're not present.?
I describe it a little differently. To me, separation anxiety means that my darling baby boy has turned into a stage five clinger. Nothing but mommy will do. Which is lovely...to a point.
It actually did happen overnight. For a solid week all he wanted was my husband. Daddy was hilarious. Cuddly. Preferred. He only wanted me when he was hungry. I'll admit, I was sad. When he extended his chubby arms toward his father I longed to be the one he was reaching for. And suddenly the next morning I was. Those arms reached for me?and never let go. Ever.
If I did manage to release myself from his surprisingly strong baby grasp I had to stay in his line of sight, preferably close enough for him to keep one hand on me at all times. And if I didn?t" I?d pay for it dearly with my ears, which would be punished by hysterical screaming and sobbing. It?s like he was in contention for the ?Most Dramatic Baby? Oscar and his performance was a shoo-in to win.
Sounds sad, right" And it is. At first.
