How a dad can put a baby to sleep in 6.4 seconds
by Becky Vieira posted in Parenting
Like many fathers, my husband has had no formal training in childcare. He?s not a pediatrician, he never spent a summer working as a nanny -- or even a babysitter for that matter -- and I?m pretty sure he only pretended to read all the baby books I bought him during my pregnancy Yet somewhere around 37 hours after our son was born he became a baby whisperer, expert swaddler and able to get our son to sleep in under 10 seconds.
Me" I was usually the one crying alongside our son, begging him to sleep and wondering why he wouldn?t comply with what seemed like such a a simple request. Sure, I was the one feeding him with my body...but when it came time for sleep he started behaving like life was a cage match and he was prepared to fight me to the death. Or at least until dawn.
Fathers just have a way with the babies, don't they" My husband can often get ours asleep in under 7 seconds -- 6.4 to be exact, I know because I set a timer one night. It usually would go like this:
1. Mom readies room by closing curtains, turning on white noise machine and offering her sacrifice of choice to the gods of baby sleep.
2. Mom feeds baby.
3. Mom changes baby's diaper.
4. Mom gives baby a calming massage.
5. Mom takes baby into previously prepared room.
6. Mom rocks baby.
7. Mom sings to baby.
8. Mom gently places baby in crib.
9. Baby's eyes pop open, looking at mom as if to ask, ?you didn't think that would work, did you"?...
