How to make slime without Borax

If you've got kids home for the summer, chances are you're making slime. We've been in Slimefest for the better part of 2017 and, honestly, if I never see a bottle of glue again it will be too soon. We actually buy the gallon jugs because we go through it so quickly.
That said, we did nix the Borax a while back after a few isolated reports of kids getting sick from it. I don't know how true those stories were, but it was enough that my kids wondered if they could find another way. It took a LOT of experimenting but they totally did it and I'm happy to report this slime is as smooth and stretchy as ever. Now if I could just get them to CLEAN UP THEIR MESS!!
Borax-free Slime
8 ounces glue
3/4 cup shaving cream
1 to 2 drops liquid food coloring (optional)
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 to 3 tablespoons saline contact lens solution, divided
Pour the glue into a medium bowl. Stir in the shaving cream and the food coloring. Add the baking soda and stir until smooth.
Add two tablespoons of the contact lens solution and stir slowly. The mixture should begin to harden, becoming stringy. Continue mixing slowly until a ball of slime forms. (We basically add contact solution until the mixture no longer sticks to the bowl.)
Pick up the slime and work between your two hands until smooth. If the slime is particularly slimy, work in another 1/2 tablespoon of contact lens solution as needed.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
