How to modernize the family meal

I don?t know what constitutes a ?traditional mom? in 2017, but I know it's not me. I don?t cook. There are no framed photos of my son in our home (yet). And I share more personal information on social media than I do in my therapist?s office.
But I believe in the family meal and we try to eat together at least once a day. It's a practice I hope we'll continue to for years to come, pending, of course, interruptions from school activities, sports practices and the occasional mom?s night out.
It?s the way I grew up, and I cherish the memories. But I'm realistic. I know that what worked 20-30 years ago needs a little updating to suit my more modern family today.
As kids, my sister and I rotated the chores. One would set and clear the table, the other would do the dishes. And we all sat down in our kitchen or dining room. We'd talk about our day over dinner. We thought dinner time was fun. We had our parents' undivided attention and didn?t realize the bigger purpose behind those meals. For my parents it was a chance to hear about our day, to connect and keep track of what was going on with our lives, whether it be learning the names of our newest friends or what we were studying in school.
According to my mom, when we came home from school we dropped our book bags and made a frantic dash to the kitchen for a snack. When she?d ask about our day we?d give her the standard, polite-yet-irritated, ?it was fine, mom? response and be on our ...
