How to put sunscreen on a baby in just 33 steps
by Becky Vieira posted in Parenting
Anyone who suggests that putting sunscreen on a baby is easy has obviously never tried it. I compare the experience to trying to trim the claws of a feral cat.
Fortunately I?m not required to trim many cat claws, but I do have to apply sunscreen to my infant son. It can be a tricky project as babies tend to squirm and, in general, not cooperate. But I?ve been able to streamline the process down to 33 simple steps:
Lay down baby
Use one hand to hold baby still and, using "mom magic," open sunscreen with remaining free hand
Begin to apply sunscreen
Baby squirms, sunscreen ends up in your ear
Grab nearest toy to use as a distraction
Shake toy in front of baby
Begin to apply sunscreen
Baby laughs, grabs toy, and sunscreen ends up in your hair Sigh, take deep breath
Bring in the ?big guns? (a.k.a. your tablet)
Tell self it will be educational programming ONLY and just for a few minutes...plus, you need to apply sunscreen for health reasons so it?s okay
Baby watches educational video
Begin to apply sunscreen
It?s working -- but suddenly baby scratches you, prompting you to conclude that since he is distracted you may as well kill two birds with one stone and clip a few fingernails while you're at it (spoiler alert: it's a trap!)
Finish nail trim and begin to apply remaining sunscreen
Baby is bored after waiting through nail trim, begins to fidget and sunscreen somehow goes up your nose
Call husband at work and ask if he can come ho...
