I'll tell you why mom phone guilt is a complete load of crap

Hardly a day goes by when I don't stumble across some blog post, Facebook status, or study about how parents are damaging their kids, by being on their phones too much. And of course, I immediately flash through a series of scenes in my mind in which I'm on my phone; in the morning, at the playground, at swim practice, before dinner. Then, the guilt. I'm a horrible mother. Must pledge to put down phone more.
Not that I consider myself to be truly phone-addicted. Just partially. The truth is I have to be on my phone or computer often because I work from home. So throughout the day, I'm checking emails and making sure I'm accessible to the people who pay me.
Of course, I'm also on my phone because I've become accustomed to the hyper-connected society in which we live. If a text pops up on the screen, I answer it, robotically, and almost immediately. I flip through social media and note what my friends ate for dinner, or what pajamas their kids are wearing to bed. We all do it! But I also attempt to keep my phone-use in check, especially around my kids. I'm very conscious of not having my face buried in my mobile device when they are trying to talk to me, although, yes, it does happen. I hate telling my little ones to wait while I finish answering an email. But is this not the reality of modern motherhood" As is the guilt that comes along with our phone-obsessed culture.
