I didn't know how noisy our house was until I got hearing aids

I'm pretty sure I've had hearing loss for most of my adult life.
It's a genetic thing in my family. Although I can't be certain exactly when it set in, for as long as I can remember, I've had to ask people to speak up. When I had a desk job, I always went to other people's offices to chat, or called them on the phone because I knew talking across the room was futile. I drove my husband a little nuts for years, asking him to repeat himself every time he talked. I've had at least one embarrassing conversation where I didn't want to keep asking someone to say the same thing over, so I smiled and nodded and she looked horrified and wandered off. I'm dying to know what I agreed to.
Pretty sure he said, "I do" just before this. I mean I'm, like, 98 percent certain he did... After a trip to visit family where we all watched TV together and I couldn't hear a single thing, I made an appointment with an audiologist, where I discovered that 1) I did, in fact, need hearing aids and 2) they're not usually covered by insurance. It's important to note that they are usually covered for children, so please don't let that stop you if your child needs them. We adults, however, are on our own and those suckers are expensive.
I decided it was cheaper to keep saying "what"" to everyone who talked to me instead of getting them.
