I had first trimester cramping in pregnancy and feared the worst

First trimester cramping in pregnancy can mean something or it can mean nothing. Great.
I miscarried my very first pregnancy, so I was a nervous wreck during my second pregnancy. When I was about 8 weeks pregnant I found myself searching the internet to learn more about first trimester cramping in pregnancy. I was scared, and having experienced a miscarriage before, I didn't know if the cramping was normal or a warning sign.
Here's what I did to figure out what was going on:
I turned to my BabyCenter Birth Club to ask the other expectant moms if what I was feeling was normal or not.
I searched online for answers. This article on abdominal pain and cramping during pregnancy is particularly useful as it spells out when the first trimester cramping is normal, what might be causing it, and when you might want to call your doctor. I learned that some cramping is normal, but if it's "severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, vaginal bleeding, headache, or fever," it's not normal. I called my doctor to ask for advice, and he had me come in the very next day for an appointment.
That night I stared at the clock as the moments ticked by seemingly in slow motion. Of course, I imagined that all of my pregnancy symptoms were gone and that I was miscarrying again. I convinced myself it was over and even removed my weekly calendar reminders of what week of pregnancy I was in.
Finally morning came...
