I never dreamed I'd be a vegan raising vegan kids

Vegans: We all know the jokes, the memes, the way we just.never.stop.talking. about.being.vegan. Yet there I was, the vegan in hiding.
I was afraid to tell anyone that I'd become a vegan. And I certainly never talked about planning on raising a kid vegan. I was the girl who loved a rare steak and lamb shanks. So this new way of living was foreign to me. I didn?t really understand why everyone was throwing paint on celebrities in fur coats. I was a new vegan, still in that strange place of feeling like all vegans were unhinged. I wondered if my pregnancy were to blame. I was certain once the hormonal madness died down, I?d be back to the bacon sandwiches in not time.
I figured Google would help me navigate this temporary life. Failing Google, I always had the mommy groups on Facebook.
As it turned out, online groups are where we all learn the word ?mommy wars?. Only the people on veganism sites weren?t arguing about car-seats, it was about how children shouldn?t even be in the world. ?Shop, don?t pop? was constantly thrown around. Yes, that was a real saying.
With a newborn baby, I really just wanted to know if my nipple was going to fall off at any moment. But I also wanted to figure out how to survive while eating mainly vegetables and grains and not start gnawing on my own arm due to starvation at the 3 a.m. feed.
Going back to work became a whole new issue. As if cursing the world with another human were...
