I tested positive for gestational diabetes and here's how I'm dealing with it

For years before I got pregnant I had heard stories of the dreaded pregnancy glucose test. As someone who does not handle blood or needles well, especially when they're combined, I admit that taking this test was one (of the many) reasons I kept postponing trying to get pregnant.
When the time came for my one-hour test, I rescheduled it. Then I rescheduled it again. Once I finally gave in and got it over with I was relieved it was so much easier than I expected (add that to the list of unnecessary horror stories people like to scare pregnant women with)!
But when I got the call from my doctor that I had failed the one-hour test and had to take the three-hour test" Total meltdown. I spent the next few days between bouts of crying and near-panic attacks (did I mention I don't do needles and blood well") and trying to reduce carbs as my doctor had suggested before the three-hour test. The advice I got from friends was along the lines of "Lots of people fail the one-hour but you'll definitely pass the three-hour test!" I was considered low-risk for gestational diabetes, as I eat a fairly balanced diet, try to exercise regularly, and had only failed the one-hour test by a few points. I felt really good about my odds of passing.
Making it through that test was such a relief and I was ready to relax and enjoy my third trimester. Only I got a call the next day from my doctor that I had failed (three of the four draws came ba...
