In defense of making a big deal out of Mother?s Day
by Melissa Willets posted in Parenting
Well, it seems it was only a matter of time before Mother?s Day became the next holiday on the chopping block.
This year, some schools are going so far as to ban the day that celebrates mothers, over fears of excluding some kids who, for a variety of reasons, won?t be celebrating. The reason given: valuing inclusivity over moms.
I?ll be the first to say I feel deeply sorry for any child who has lost his or her mother. Nothing could be sadder or more painful. So for those kids, I understand why Mother?s Day would be a very, very tough time. I also respect all kinds of diverse families who may not have a mother in the home by choice. But that being said, why should the circumstances of some, mean that others cannot still embrace Mother?s Day" There must be a way to sensitively and compassionately serve both needs. For instance, my kids? teachers are beyond amazing, and I have full confidence they can handle the situations that would require a different approach than simply handing a child a construction paper card and asking them to draw a picture for their mom on it.
Of course, then there are those who are crying out that Mother?s Day has become too commercialized. Can those folks not go after Valentine?s Day or Easter, and leave us moms out of it"
