I spent most of my life blissfully unaware of the ins and outs of infertility. Let?s be honest, until I got married my biggest concern was birth control, not fertility assistance.
I knew about woman?s infertility issues. And of course I knew there could be challenges with men as well, I just wan?t exposed to that. Until I married my ex-husband.
We spent a year trying to get pregnant with no luck. My period was never late, not even by one day. My gynecologist sent us to see a fertility specialist.
We had the consultation, the physical examinations, and the testing. I proceeded through it all almost numb. I always wanted to be a mother and never considered that might not happen. When the results were in we were shocked, to say the least. It turned out I was ovulating regularly and my egg reserve was high. My ex, unfortunately, had a low sperm count, low sperm motility, and abnormal sperm morphology (the percentage of ?normal? sperm).
?There is still a chance for you to get pregnant,? the doctor said. ?But it will take some work and assistance.?
We decided to dive into the process immediately. And around this time inquisitive and excited family and friends began asking about our baby timeline. I wanted to share our struggle, after all we?d need all the love and support we could get on this journey. But my ex disagreed. He wanted to stay quiet.
It wasn?t that he didn?t want anyone to know, he just felt ashamed that ...
