In 2013, a mythological girl's name was soaring in popularity. Then, abruptly, it crashed and parents worldwide found themselves with children whose names are associated with terrorism.
What would you do if you had an Isis (named as a nod to the goddess Isis of the Egyptian pantheon), but the headlines relentlessly screamed "ISIS threat," "ISIS kills," and "Stop ISIS""
Of course, there's no way the parents who chose the lovely goddess name could have predicted it would also become the acronym for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a fearsome terrorist group. But now that it's happened they're in a tough position -- and they're not alone.
Take a look at these five situations, and consider if any of them would spur you to seek a name change.
1. Terrorism: Much like Isis and ISIS, for many the name Osama has become irrevocably associated with "Bin Laden." The Guardian reports: "Unsurprisingly, both Usama and Osama fall sharply in popularity after 2001" among British parents.
Though some feel it's a shame the name is so controversial, it's fair to say many have strong feelings about it. One commenter opined it's a "definite no-no" in parts of the world, and likened it to a parent choosing "Adolf or Satan."
