Jimmy Kimmel crumbles telling the world about son's open-heart surgery

Jimmy Kimmel has made a career out of laughs, but the reality of an infant going through open-heart surgery has crippled the late-night talk show host's funny bone.

The gist of the emotional story is that Jimmy's wife, Molly McNearney, gave birth to a boy named William John Kimmel on April 21. A few hours after his arrival, a nurse (the first of many healthcare workers the 49-year-old comedian made a point of thanking by name) noticed newborn Billy was turning purple. "It's a terrifying thing," the proud dad shared, his voice breaking. "You know, my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what's going on and I'm standing in the middle of a lot of worried-looking people -- kind of like right now -- who were trying to figure out what the problem is."
After an x-ray ruled out Billy's lungs as the problem a sonogram of his heart revealed a condition in which a pulmonary valve was completely blocked. Additionally, there was a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of the newborn's heart.
Three days later, Billy underwent open-heart surgery at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, which Jimmy understandably describes as "the longest three hours of my life."
