Keep your baby close at hand with the new by-your-bed sleepers
by Joyce Slaton posted in Products
Some parents don't like putting their babies in a great big crib in a faraway room. Your baby's tiny newborn body seems to swim in a crib's space and look so lonely. And even if you have a baby monitor, a nursery can feel uncomfortably distant.
The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) agrees -- sleeping in the same room as your baby can decrease the risk of SIDS by as much as 50 percent. But the AAP doesn't recommend bed-sharing with your baby, particularly for the first six months. So how are you supposed to have your baby sleeping comfortably in your room but not your bed"
By-your-bed sleepers have been around for years, but traditionally they cost a lot, and are heavy and huge. A new crop of by-your-bed sleepers is coming out at a much more reasonable price point, though; a baby gear trend that we expect is only going to get bigger. Here are a few of our favorites.
1. SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleeper Bassinet: For years, SwaddleMe has made an inexpensive metal-and-mesh bassinet that was meant to go right in your bed, between two sleeping partners. But this bassinet (confusingly given the same name) slides in right next to your bed, so that your baby can be safe, yet comfortingly right next to you. We like how sturdy the bassinet is (we've given it a good shake), and how small the footprint is -- the slender legs take up a lot less room than bassinets with solid bottoms. The rocking feature is great, too. (Amazon, $96.63)
