Kids are surprisingly good at spotting bad guys

How does a kid know the difference between good guys and bad guys in a story" As media becomes more nuanced, it?s sometimes hard to tell. On occasion, they might ask an adult if somebody is good or bad. Often, they have to decide on their own. Don?t worry -- kids are remarkably insightful.
Any sort of conflict in a story can bring my daughter to tears. She screamed and openly sobbed when we took her to see Moana, then burst into hysterical laughter at the happy ending. Unfortunately, my wife and I never know what she might find scary or what will leave her completely unfazed.
With Beauty and the Beast, we figured we?d have to do lots of hand-holding during the beast?s introduction. She didn?t even blink at the snarling, roaring creature that imprisoned Belle. Instead, she asked us to turn the movie off when Gaston snatched Belle?s book. She proceeded to cringe every time he was on the screen. In an odd turn of events, we also exposed her to Little Shop of Horrors. My wife is about to take the stage as the plant, and we wanted her to be prepared for Mommy eating people. She loved the carnivorous plant, even asking to see the alternate ending where Audrey II conquers the world.
On the other hand, one particular character did frighten her in Little Shop of Horrors -- Steve Martin?s abusive dentist. Frankly, I?ll be quite happy if she grows up with an intolerance for jerks like Gaston and Orin Scrivello, DDS.
