My eyebrows fell out when I was pregnant -- side effects you don't expect
by Michelle Stein posted in Pregnancy
From swollen feet to crazy cravings, it's no secret pregnancy does strange things to your body. But there were definitely a few side effects I wasn't prepared for when I entered the land of expecting mamas -- like the fact that my eyebrows nearly disappeared.
Yes, seriously. OK, maybe not entirely. But the voodoo of pregnancy hormones drastically transformed my normally prominent eyebrows (for a pale blonde) into the envy of over-plucked 90s brows. Thankfully, mine started returning to their normal thickness a few months after my baby was born. But it was still unnerving.
I recently spoke with Dr. Tamika Auguste, an OB-gyn at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, to get to the bottom of a few weird -- but totally normal -- side effects of growing a baby. 1) Thinning of hair on the head/thinning of eyebrows or eyelashes
While many expecting mamas enjoy extra thick and luxurious locks, it's not necessarily everyone's experience.
?It varies much so from woman to woman,? Auguste said of fluctuation in hair growth during pregnancy. ?Some notice thinning of their hair -- eyebrows, hair on their head, etc. Some women notice an overgrowth or an enhancement of their hair growth during pregnancy. It really has to do with your hormonal balance, and how your body reacts to the hormones, particularly estrogen. During pregnancy, your estrogen levels are super high. [Differences in hair growth are] just how you respond to that.?
