No one was stepped on, no one cried: My third father-daughter dance
by Charlie Brooks posted in Parenting
Two years ago, I took my daughter to our first father-daughter dance. It went well, although I admittedly have low standards. Since I didn't make her cry or step on somebody else's child, I considered it a rousing success. We're now three years into this event, and some things have changed while others have not.
Dancing with my daughter hasn't changed. Dancing with my daughter is still more or less a game of Ring Around the Rosie. Of course, it's not like I have a lot of other moves to show off. Mostly, we locked hands and twirl in a circle until we?re both dizzy.
Actually, it has changed a bit. It?s not exactly the same as it used to be, though. My daughter?s taken dance classes, so sometimes we practice her moves. This involves mostly repetitive kicking or shuffling of our feet. It?ll be pretty cool in a couple years when she puts multiple moves together on her own. My daughter no longer eats. While the snack table used to be a main attraction, now it?s all about the dance floor. The only food that held her attention was a snowman-shaped cheese sculpture, and she wasn?t interested in damaging the poor guy by eating him. Well, she did eat one type of food?
Chocolate is the exception. My daughter can now unwrap Hershey?s kisses without any help. And since I decided to let her do what she wanted at the dance, that meant a figurative ton of chocolate. But it?s okay. After all, the sugar high is just a parenting myth, right"
