No top sheet" What kind of barbarians am I raising"!

There's a quiet battle underway inside my house.
It starts with me telling my boys, ages 12 and 10, to strip their beds each weekend. They oblige, and say nothing as I hand them a fresh set of sheets -- fitted sheet, top sheet and pillowcase (or, "pillow sheet" as my youngest has appropriately renamed it).
They make no mention of not wanting a top sheet, and yet when I go to tuck them in at night it's mysteriously missing. Not like it's been kicked to the end of the bed and is tangled by their feet, it's more of an it-never-got-put-on-in-the-first-place kind of situation. Those little turds are hiding their top sheets in closets and drawers so they don't have to use them!
Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I know this is a miniscule-sized problem, but it's also a housekeeping battle I'm finding hard to lose. As someone who was raised with a top sheet tucked in every night, it's just so wrong not to have one. Apparently my kids aren't alone in hating that particular layer, however. Sunday evening Buzzfeed sent this article through my social feed: "Throw your top sheet in the trash."
The staff writer got it right in that I've been assuming "the bedding situation in your childhood home...was the only reasonable default," but where she had an later-in-life enlightenment I'm glued to hospital-corners tradition.
She writes:
