Photos: Mom celebrates twins who survived rare syndrome

Virginia mom Lilia Alvarado was thrilled to learn she was about to become a mom for the first time; to twins! But then, she was thrown a ?curve ball? at 30 weeks of pregnancy, as she explained on Bored Panda:
?My identical twins were showing signs of a rare syndrome ? Twin to Twin Transfusion (TTTS). This is a complication in which the blood supply between the two embryos is disproportionate due to a shared placenta, and results in a high mortality rate. TTTS occurs when donor baby gives all the nutrients to the receiver baby, this causes the donor to develop slower. The receiver baby is also in trouble because their heart is working overtime pumping all that blood, which may lead to heart failure.? Lilia says the end of her pregnancy was the scariest time of her life, but adds, ?I tried to keep calm knowing that stress would only have a negative effect on my daughters and myself.?
At 35 weeks, Lilia?s doctors decided an emergency Cesarean section was the safest way to prevent further developmental problems from occurring. Her twins Juliette and Annabella were born at 3.9 pounds, and 4.10 pounds, respectively. As explained on Fox & Tales, ?Annabella was noticeably a tad bigger and heavier than Juliette due to [their condition]."
Juliette had to stay in the NICU for over two weeks, but Annabella was ready to leave the NICU earlier.
