Hillary Randall knew the doctor she was seeing during her first pregnancy "was and is still c-section happy." At 39-weeks and 4 days, he told her her blood pressure was high, and she'd need to be induced.
"When I got to the hospital my blood pressure was fine, but they still proceeded with the induction," Hillary told BabyCenter in an email. "After 16 hours of labor I was rushed into an emergency c-section because my son was flatlining and I was only 3 centimeters."
After that experience, the new mom already knew she'd be interested in a VBAC, or vaginal birth after cesarean section, for her next baby. But when she mentioned the idea to her doctor at her 6-week postpartum visit, he said, "If your body didn't work this time, what makes you think it will next time"" Three years later, Hillary became pregnant with her second child. During an early prenatal appointment, she says her doctor made his feeling crystal clear. "This time he told me he will NOT do VBAC and if I even attempted to have a vaginal birth that my uterus would rupture and me and my baby would both die."
Understandably, Hillary began looking for a new doctor, and instead settled on a midwife. "Having a midwife I thought that I would for sure get my VBAC."
