In the wake of Prince's death I'm learning quite a bit about the singer so many loved intensely. Turns out that while I was being raised on Bach and show tunes, you all were infinitely cooler and rocking out to Purple Rain. So while I was, of course, sad to hear of Prince's passing on Thursday, the news didn't immediately hit me particularly hard.
And then I came a across an interview Mayte gave last summer, and I saw the singer in a whole new light.
She and Prince married on Valentine?s Day in 1996, and almost immediately she became pregnant. Their son, Boy Gregory, died just a week after birth due to Pfeiffer syndrome, which is a rare defect of the skull.
Mayte says that the loss, followed by a miscarriage shortly afterwards, tore them apart.
"To lose two babies is really scary... it really caught on me emotionally, physically, everything," she said in 2015. "It took me at least 15 years to get over it and still, to this day, I miss my son.
"I believe a child dying between a couple either makes you stronger or it doesn?t. For me, it was very, very hard to move forward and for us as a couple I think it probably broke us."
