Florence was a top contender on my baby name shortlist. Not only do I dig the lovely, worldly, old-fashioned sound of it, but it was also my grandmother's name. She didn't go by Florence, though, she went by the shorter version, Flo. Chances are my daughter would end up a Flo as well, and that name I wasn't so crazy about. In the end, I used it as a middle name.
Some parents are so concerned about nicknames that they try to eliminate the possibility altogether, leaning toward one-syllable names that simply can't be shortened. One mom in the BabyCenter Community who was in search of a "nickname-proof" name explained, "Because my name can be turned into so many names I absolutely HATE nicknames (no offense at all to everyone who does, but when you're called everything but your name your entire life it's enough to make you go crazy)."
